Salary Cap Circumvention

As we await the arbitrator's decision in respect of the Kovalchuk contract, I can't help but feel that the owners can only blame themselves for this mess. For years, the owners have taken advantage of the NHLPA's divisiveness and disorganization, but the owners own lack of solidarity and unity has ultimately lead to this high profile dispute.

The owners were willing to lock out the players and lose an entire season in order to implement a salary cap, which cap has increased from $39m to $59.4m since 2005. Unfortunately for the majority, a few rogue owners have taken advantage of a loophole in the CBA and undermined the entire salary cap system by agreeing to front-loaded contracts.

The only mistake the NHL made was waiting until now rather than challenging the first of these ridiculous deals.
