...so now everything else can begin to fall into place. It seems like the Kovi saga has held up a number of other transactions. With Kovalchuk now signed long term (rumour has it 17 years), the Devils are going to be looking to clear out some cap space and solidify their D by finding a puck moving D-man to replace Paul Martin. It should not surprise anyone if Lou talks to Burkie about Kaberle. While the Devils are going to try to get rid of Rolston and Zubruis, the Leafs won't take anything less than Zach Parise or Travis Zajac. Parise would be an ideal fit for the Leafs and such a move would reunite him with his US Olympic Team coach and GM.
Proposed Trade: Parise for Kaberle (conditional on Kaberle signing an extension).
Why this trade could happen: The big question for any team looking at Kaberle is whether he'll bolt at season's end as an unrestricted free agent. However, if the Devils can re-negotiate a long term deal with Kabs prior to making the trade, his value to them will be much higher. The chances of Kaberle agreeing to an extension with the Devils is quite good - Patrick Elias is a close friend and Czech Republic teammate. Elias has recently stated in an interview that he'd love to see Kaberle come to New Jersey.
With Kovalchuk and Elias on the left wing, the value of Kaberle to the Devils would exceed the value of Parise.
