Well I just got back from my honeymoon and, in addiiton to fighting a cold, I spent most of the weekend catching up on Leafs news. Here's a few thoughts on the top stories.
1. Draft: I don't know much about Brad Ross, but if he comes as advertised (i.e. a Darcy Tucker Clone), I'm quite happy with the selection.
2. Marc Savard: If the Leafs are able to get Marc Savard in a "soft deal" for Grabovski, I will be ecstatic. Suddenly Kessel for two firsts and a second becomes Kessel and Savard for Grabovski, two firsts and a second. That's a bit easier to stomach. I know Savard has a history of concussions, but when you finish 29th in the league, you have to take some risks; especially when the potential reward is a 100 pt centre. If he stays healthy (this is not a big "if"), the Leafs would have a solid first line with Kessel and Savard. As discussed below, I think the other winger on this line will be acquired via a trade for Kaberle. Acquiring Savard would also take some pressure of Bozak by letting him develop on the 2nd line, with Stalberg and Kulemin on his wings. Acquiring Savard would also allow the Leafs to give Kadri one year in the AHL to develop and get stronger. I would hate to see him rushed into the NHL before he's ready and getting Savard would alleviate the need to do that.
3. Kaberle: Not surprisingly, Kabs is still a Leaf. Given the events of the past weekend, I think it's fairly obvious that Burke wants a roster player and not draft picks for Kabs. Once the opening day of free agency passes, there will be teams looking to add Kabs to their rosters and we should be able to trade him for a top 6 winger.
